The curriculum of the department aims not only to develop students’fundamental language skills and professional knowledge, but also to cultivate a strong foundation in the humanities. The ultimate goal is to nurture culturally literate individuals of the 21st century—those who can think critically, express themselves clearly, communicate effectively, and possess both historical awareness and a global perspective.
The courses offered can be broadly categorized as follows:
1. Fundamental Language Skills Courses:
Designed to train and strengthen students’English listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities, these courses are conducted in small-class settings to enhance learning outcomes.
2. Literature and Linguistics Courses:
These courses focus on building professional expertise in literature and linguistics. They are structured progressively from introductory to advanced levels, guiding students into the specialized fields of literary and linguistic studies.
3. Second Foreign Language Courses:
These courses provide students with opportunities to study foreign languages other than English. Available languages include Japanese, French, German, and Spanish, and students may choose based on their interests.
In addition, the department offers a wide range of other courses such as translation, applied English, and English language teaching, allowing students to select electives that align with their individual interests and career goals.
The undergraduate program requires a total of 130 credits for graduation, including 28 university-wide required courses (4 credits of Freshman Chinese, 6 credits of Freshman English, and 18 credits of General Education courses) and 48 credits of departmental core courses.
